Gavin Donnelly

Currently, I am Head of English in the Senior School at Marlborough College Malaysia, a co-educational British international school in Malaysia for boarding and day pupils. The school is the sister school of Marlborough College in Wiltshire, UK.

Achievements/Tasks:

• Developed a comprehensive assessment system to track student progress and provide feedback for improvement.
• Promoted a culture of excellence within the department through high expectations for both students and faculty members alike.
• Evaluated performance continuously to identify areas in need of improvement and implement strategies to keep team on-track.
• Increased department efficiency by streamlining communication channels, leading to improved collaboration among faculty members.
• Successfully ed the department through two school inspection in 2024 - IB and BSO.

• Reshaping and reorganising the English Department to improve the quality of T&L; Managing and developing a group of 16 teachers; Transforming the relevant content of courses and improving academic performance from KS3-KS5; Leading and incorporating The Kings College 'Let's Think in English' programme across KS3; Implementing new iGCSE and IB English courses; Leading the English Department through three 'outstanding' inspections.

• The British International School of Ho Chi Minh City was founded in 1997 and is now one of the largest international schools in Vietnam with 2000+ students from over 50 countries
• In 2019 it was described by the PENTA and WASC inspection teams as 'outstanding in every category'.

• Created a raft of resources for IGCSE, A-level and IB Dp HL and SL Language and Literature, focusing on EAL provision, AFL, and differentiation; Developed resources for IGCSE, A-level and IB Dip HL and SL Language and Literature, focusing on EAL provision, AFL and differentiation; Keenly supported collaboration in the creation of schemes of work for the new Oxford AQA, CIE IGCSE and IB Dip HL Literature and Language and Literature courses; Re-evaluated and improved the departmental support given to students completing IB English A extended essays.

• Responsible for the running of the English, Drama, and Media Studies departments; Managed a group of 18 teachers; Implemented a more focused and united approach to T&L by improving approaches to assessment and exam revision; Assisted in achieving some of the best IGCSE and IB results in the history of the school.

• It is the premier school in Brunei Darussalam, South East Asia.

• Wrote a range of schemes of work for IGCSE, A-level and IB Dip HL and SL Language and Literature, focusing on EAL provision, AFL and differentiation; Coordinator for the teaching of the IB Literature and Language & Literature courses (HL & SL); Led the introduction and adoption of 'Philosophy 4 Children (P4C)' within the English department.

• Created many of the resources for the implementation of the IB Dp at the school; Delivered training to all IB teachers to support the integration of ToK across all groups on the Dp; Introduced a 'Lunchtime Lectures' programme.

• Responsible for the pastoral and academic care of Year 7 students; Responsible for the pastoral and academic care of Y13 students; Responsible for all student UCAS applications and for improving the system of tutor and teacher support.

• Responsible for teaching the 5-14, Standard Level, Highers and Advanced Highers curricula; Eco-schools Coordinator; Creative Writing Leader - responsible for creating key resources and supporting colleagues in teaching creative writing.
