Accomplishments

Final Year Project Achievement
Title: The Correlation of Cutibacterium sp. Phylotypes with Antibiotic Susceptibility Profile

  • Collected and processed Cutibacterium acnes isolates from facial swab samples of Malaysian patients.
  • Performed multiplex PCR to classify isolates into phylotypes (IA1, IA2, IB, IC, II, III).
  • Found that phylotype IA1 was the most prevalent among the samples and showed high clindamycin resistance rates.
  • However, no statistically significant correlation was observed between phylotype IA1 and the overall antibiotic resistance profile, suggesting that resistance may be distributed across multiple phylotypes.
  • Utilized agarose gel electrophoresis for genetic analysis and antibiotic susceptibility testing for phenotypic profiling.

Benefit & Impact:

  • Contributes to the understanding of C. acnes genetic diversity and its antibiotic resistance patterns in the Malaysian population.
  • Provides local epidemiological data to guide more effective acne treatment strategies and antibiotic stewardship.
  • Supports dermatologists and clinical microbiologists in making evidence-based decisions for acne management, reducing the misuse of antibiotics, and combating resistance development.
